Keratin smoothing suits most hair, but not every hair type gets the same result, and a few need a closer look before we book you in. The treatment coats each strand in a smoothing layer that calms frizz and loosens texture. It doesn’t permanently straighten, and it doesn’t change your colour. We don’t recommend it during pregnancy or if you have a lung condition, because of the fumes during the heat step.

What Happens During Your Keratin Treatment?

Allow about 3 hours for hair to the neck and about 3.5 hours for longer hair. There’s nothing you need to do beforehand; arrive with your hair as it normally is.

1. Consultation and hair check. Your stylist looks at your texture, condition and any recent colour or chemical work, and confirms the result you’re after, from softened curls to as sleek as your hair will go.

2. Cleanse and rough-dry. A shampoo removes product build-up, then your hair is blast-dried.

3. Apply and process. The Lisse Design keratin goes on section by section and processes for 20 minutes, with no heat.

4. Blow-dry and straighten. Your hair is blow-dried, then flat-ironed in fine sections. The heat is what sets the treatment, so this is the longest step.

5. Rinse, treat and finish. The keratin is rinsed out, a conditioning treatment goes on, then a final rinse and blow-dry. Unlike most keratin systems, the product doesn’t stay in your hair.

That last point is why there’s no waiting period. You can wash your hair, tie it up, wear a hat or go for a swim the same day; the only rule is to rinse chlorine or salt water out afterwards.

How Long Does a Keratin Treatment Last?

A keratin treatment at All About Salon lasts up to 3 months with normal washing and care. We use Alfaparf Milano’s Lisse Design Keratin Therapy. The smoothing effect doesn’t switch off on a set date; it fades gradually as the keratin washes out, so your hair eases back to its natural texture over a few weeks rather than all at once.

How long you get depends mostly on how often you wash. Two or three washes a week is normal and gets you the full three months; daily washing shortens it. A sulphate-free, sodium-free shampoo and conditioner helps, and so does rinsing chlorine or salt water out after a swim.

Three months is the usual gap between treatments, but there’s no fixed date: rebook whenever you feel the smoothness has worn off. Your stylist will tell you at your appointment what to expect for your hair.

Keratin Treatment vs Hair Straightening and Other Treatments

Keratin smoothing is often confused with permanent straightening, and with conditioning treatments. They do different jobs. Keratin smoothing reduces frizz and relaxes texture for up to 3 months, then washes out: it’s a reset, not a permanent change. Permanent chemical straightening restructures the hair so it stays straight until it grows out, which is a bigger commitment and harder on the hair. Nanoplasty is another smoothing system, marketed as formaldehyde-free, with a stronger straightening effect than keratin; it also wears off over months. Lakmé K2.0 and deep-conditioning masques repair and hydrate, which makes hair healthier and shinier, but they don’t change its texture or stop frizz on their own. A gloss adds shine and refreshes tone, nothing more.

We chose Lisse Design because it reduces frizz and loosens texture while leaving hair soft and moving rather than stiff, because it can be tuned to the result you want, from tamed curls to sleek and straight, and because it rinses out at the end rather than sitting in your hair, so there’s no downtime.
